How to celebrate World Ocean Day on June 8

Ocean Week Canada 2025’s closing weekend features events and activities from coast to coast to coast

HALIFAX, June 6, 2025 – Communities across Canada will be hosting inspiring, ocean-themed events this weekend in honour of World Ocean Day on Sunday June 8, 2025. The events are part of Ocean Week Canada, an annual celebration of ocean connections and culture that kicked off June 1. These celebrations are made possible in part through Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s Oceans Management Contribution Program.

“Ocean Week Canada is a chance to celebrate all the ways that the ocean sustains life, the economy, and culture here in Canada. Participating in marine conservation activities helps Canadians connect with, and learn more about, our vast ocean landscape. With the longest coastline in the world, Canadians have a unique opportunity to make a difference locally, as well as globally,” says the Honourable Joanne Thompson, Minister of Fisheries.

Festivals and events are one of the best opportunities to meet ocean experts and advocates. This year’s schedule is packed with day-long activities, including a series of family-friendly events taking place June 8 in communities such as Campbell River, Gibsons, Halifax, Milton, Montreal, Nanaimo, Salmon River, Sechelt, St. John’s, Toronto, Vancouver,Victoria, Whitehorse

Other ways to celebrate Ocean Week Canada include:

  • Spend a day on the water. First-hand experiences help strengthen your connection to nature.  Whether it’s a lake, river, or bay—every waterbody in Canada links to the ocean.
  • Watch stories from Water Guardians and coastal communities. Discover the ocean and ocean culture wherever you are.
  • Take action for the ocean. Find shoreline cleanup information, community science projects, advocacy and more in Ocean Week Canada’s Take Action Zone

“The goal of Ocean Week Canada is to nurture ocean literate communities, to build bonds and strengthen connections that help people live in ways that ensure a healthy ocean,” says Diz Glithero, Executive Director of the Canadian Ocean Literacy Coalition.

Ocean Week Canada is coordinated by the Canadian Ocean Literacy Coalition in collaboration with regional hubs and partners across the country. A complete list of events and activities is available at oceanweek.ca/events.
