The Environment Resources Management Association (ERMA) is hosting a fly-tying symposium for youth in Grand Falls-Windsor, Newfoundland and Labrador, focused on raising awareness about salmon, their conservation, and the importance of wild salmon to Newfoundland and Labrador’s freshwater ecosystems.
The event is expected to welcome more than 100 students from 10 schools in the region. Students will participate in hands-on learning activities, including fly tying, educational activities about salmon, and interactive presentations offered by participating organizations.
DFO fishery officers have been invited to participate and will speak with students about the rules and regulations that support responsible fisheries management. They will also conduct a hands-on scenario to help students better understand the work fishery officers do to protect fish, their habitat, and aquatic resources. The officers will also showcase some of the equipment used in their work, including vehicles, field gear, and drone technology.
This event takes place during Ocean Week Canada and helps raise awareness among young people about important issues concerning salmon conservation, aquatic ecosystems, and the responsible management of freshwater and marine environments.
