Unlocking the Ocean’s Greatest Mysteries through Innovation and Data

Ocean Week Victoria

June 2nd 5:00 PM - 6:30 PM
Victoria, British Columbia

The ocean covers 70% of the Earth, yet much of it hold many mysteries.

This Ocean Week, Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) invites you to celebrate its 20 years of ocean innovation and exploration. Meet two ONC experts who will dive into their experience working with the deep-sea and in remote Antarctic areas.

Join us for this free event—advanced registration encouraged.

Speakers:

Meghan Paulson – As Executive Director Observatory Operations at Ocean Networks Canada, Meghan leads the physical and digital operations teams, co-ordinating efforts between the teams that ensure accessibility—for researchers and the public alike—to all data being produced from ONC and partner observatories and ensuring that all operations are completed in a safe and environmentally responsible manner. Prior to joining ONC in 2020, Meghan spent over 20 years working in the energy industry in engineering and management roles for onshore and offshore projects in the US and internationally. Meghan has been involved in scientific and industry offshore operations for many years and still loves going to sea. Meghan holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Dalhousie University and a Master of Science in Ocean Engineering from the University of Rhode Island.

Bradley Wells – Bradley is a mechanical engineer specializing in subsea observatory deployment and recovery operations using small vessels. He thrives at the intersection of high-consequence engineering design and the high-intensity reality of field work. Bradley also contributes to the design of ROV-deployable platforms for Ocean Networks Canada’s cabled deep-sea network, ensuring the observatories are robust enough to survive their deployments at the bottom of the ocean.

Ruchie Custan – Ruchie is a Marine Equipment Specialist at Ocean Networks Canada specializing in low-power electronic systems for autonomous ocean observatories. With a background in electronics engineering and a decade of experience in ocean technology, he designs and develops reliable hardware and embedded systems that help make near-real-time ocean monitoring possible in harsh and remote environments, supporting scientists and other stakeholders in understanding changing ocean conditions.
