The Canadian White Pelican Festival

June 3rd 2023 11:00 AM - 4:00 PM
High River, Alberta

In Celebration of the Ocean Week Canada, IRERI- Mexican, Latino & Cross- Cultural Society Presents:

THE CANADIAN WHITE PELICAN FESTIVAL

Join the Movement about the conservation of the Ocean and learn about the Canadian White Pelican migration to Mexico. It will be a good opportunity to celebrate the diversity of High River while learning!

Learn how we shed light on the communities of High River and the Petatan Mexico, places where the White Pelican have a moment of rest in their migration.

The  White Pelican or Pelicano Borregon (in Spanish),  plays an important part as part of the marine ecosystem.

The White Pelican feeds on marine fish and we would like to highlight the importance of the seas and their conservation, to preserve this species. The ecosystem and human life depend on healthy and balanced seas.

The Mexican Festival of the Canadian White Pelican would be composed of several activities:

  1. Information about the importance of this species and its preservation, documentary or talk about this species by an expert (bilingual presentation).
  2. Relation between the ecosystem of Canada and Mexico, making drawings and sculptures (Kite building Workshop).
  3. Economic importance of this bird in the Mexican territory.
  4. Dance festival, to show the culture, music and folkloric dances that are performed in the Jalisco and Michoacan States of Mexico and that give a framework to the White Pelican festival in Petatan Mexico. These cultural and artistic activities will help our Mexican children to understand their country, while they are living in Canada, at the same time that there is a cultural and artistic exchange by showing the Folkloric Dance Permonces of these regions of Mexico to the general inhabitants in High River Canada.
