Celebrate Ocean Week Canada with Canadian Geographic and Oceana Canada as we peer deep beneath the waves off the Grand Banks of Newfoundland. The Southern Newfoundland Slope is a biologically rich, largely unseen deep-sea ecosystem, home to ancient coral habitats, vast sea pen fields, and submarine canyons that support diverse marine life, including commercially important species and species at risk. Recent expeditions are revealing this ecosystem in new detail, deepening understanding of how these habitats function, what they support, and why they matter. Discovery Beneath the Surface brings together marine scientists, Indigenous leaders, storytellers, policymakers, and the public to explore what these discoveries reveal about Canada’s deep ocean, and how science, stewardship, and collaboration inform long-term understanding and decision-making.
The event features a panel discussion moderated by Canadian Geographic contributing editor Alanna Mitchell, followed by a reception.
Admission is pay-what-you-can. Donations support the Royal Canadian Geographical Society’s public programming.
