Join Sea Smart and Surfrider Foundation Vancouver in celebrating World Ocean Day! On June 7th, we will be getting together once again to celebrate our love for the ocean. At one of Vancouver’s most popular beaches, we want to raise awareness, and celebrate with our community!
On Saturday, June 7th, Sea Smart in partnership with Surfrider Foundation Vancouver, will cleaning up and sorting the waste collected at Spanish Banks, and we need your help!
You can help as a BEACH CLEANUP VOLUNTEER, we supply buckets and hand pickers, or you can bring your own (tongs work great too!). Alternatively, you can join us as a LITTER SORTER VOLUNTEER and help sort through what people bring back to us during this cleanup. As a litter sorter, this is a great way to learn not just about picking up litter, but also about sorting it into various categories for recycling and proper disposal education.
We are excited to partner with Earnest Ice Cream. They are providing free mini ice cream sandwiches (while supplies last) to those who visit us at the Sea Smart table, and sign up for our newsletter!
Safety First: We have a supply of buckets, work gloves, and pickers. But please bring your own gloves and equipment if you have it available! For safety reasons please wear closed toed shoes and always use a picker to sift through the sand to avoid sharp objects. If you come across any sharp or hazardous object, mark it and tell us, our team can handle the safe removal.
Sea Smart’s World Oceans Day 2025 campaign is a month-long celebration designed to bring our community together in support of ocean protection and environmental education. Throughout June, we’re hosting a variety of events, including a climate change film screening in partnership with Patagonia Kits (June 5), a shoreline cleanup with Surfrider at Spanish Banks (June 7).
We’re also launching an online Silent Auction, which raises critical funds for our Keeping Environmental Learning Possible (K.E.L.P.) Education Fund—a scholarship program that ensures students and classrooms from underserved communities can access our hands-on ocean education programs free of charge. In 2024, over 80% of Sea Smart program participants came from underserved communities, a number we aim to grow through this campaign.
