Peninsula Streams Society: Estuary Clean & Beach Seine

Ocean Week Victoria

June 4th 2024 9:30 AM - 12:00 PM
Victoria, British Columbia
Event Information
Where: Meet at Regatta Point Park
When: Tuesday, June 4th, 2024 from 9:30am – 12pm
Parking: There is limited parking at the end of Central Spur Road; otherwise please use street parking
Details: We will divide you into groups and assign each group to a different section of waterfront between the Bay Street Bridge and the Selkirk Trestle (which is all within walking distance). Those with watercraft will be assigned beaches on the opposite shore (weather and water conditions permitting). After sweeping your assigned area for garbage (along the low/high tide lines and up into the back shore), please return to the park by 11:30 am with the garbage. We will then conduct some seine netting demonstrations to collect fish in the estuary and hopefully capture coho salmon smolts.
Families are welcome but please be aware that this is an urbanized industrial area, and attendees should be prepared to watch out for hazardous items (eg. glass and needles) and to work on uneven terrain. Rubber or waterproof boots are recommended as it is a muddy shoreline.
We will supply gloves, garbage grabbers, and garbage bags. Please dress for the weather as we will be working rain or shine and bring a water bottle. Carpooling and biking to the work location is encouraged.
Insurance: All 2024 PSS members are covered by our insurance policy. You can become a member, or update it, for only $10 ($5 for students) by signing up here. All non-members will have to sign a waiver on the day-of.
