BC’s Coastal Marine Strategy
June 6, noon to 1pm
Presentation by Alicia Elgert
Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS)
Many threats face the coast, including biodiversity loss, intensifying impacts of climate change, and increasing conflicts over resources. To make matters worse, we’ve inherited a jumble of regulations and laws overseen by different provincial ministries and departments.
A lack of direction, organization, and communication means that coastal issues will continue to be dealt with in an ad-hoc fashion, without anyone looking at the big picture.
The Coastal Marine Strategy will serve as a Blueprint for the Coast. It will provide the Government of BC with a long-term plan to effectively protect and manage BC’s coastal regions in coordination with Indigenous, federal, and municipal governments.
About Alicia Elgert
Alicia lives and works on the unceded, traditional, and ancestral territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and səl̓ilwətaɁɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.
As a Conservation Campaigner for CPAWS-BC’s Ocean Program, Alicia advocates for provincial plans, policies, and marine protected areas that will benefit biodiversity and people alike. Lately, Alicia spends most of her time advocating for the BC Coastal Marine Strategy – an intersectional plan that’s been co-developed between the Government of BC and First Nations to better protect and manage the coast. When she’s not working, you’ll likely find Alicia crawling around in tidepools or the forest developing her skills in nature photography.
