Right in front of the doors of the school “Ecole Les Éclaireurs”, in Fredericton, New Brunswick, a small stream is about to become the site of a grand adventure!
This Ocean Week Canada, 2nd and 3rd grade students will head out to their beloved stream for a day full of stories, biodiversity observations, and real water quality testing experiences. Thanks to funding for equipment from Water Rangers, these young scientists will undertake real water quality tests, compare their results, and will think like real scientists.
The event will have another special touch: the students will create links between their outdoor discoveries and My Name is Goutte, a book created by the students themselves. Imagine making real science and seeing it come to life throughout a story which you yourself helped write!
This stream is already a favorite spot for students, a place where they come to observe living creatures and learn more about the ecosystems thriving in their schoolyard. Canada’s Ocean Week gives them the opportunity to take their curiosity even further, by exploring how the water flowing near their school is part of a much larger journey that connects to the ocean.
With wonder, curiosity, and a little mud on their boots, these young people will become the environmental stewards their community needs. What a wonderful way to celebrate the water that unites us all!
