Love letters to Gta’n: BIPOC environmentalists appreciation of the Atlantic ocean

The social justice NL Co op’s rights of the Atlantic ocean group presents;

Love Letters to Gta’n: A BIPOC environmentalists appreciation of the Atlantic ocean.

  • This is a free outdoor event at Topsail beach (a semi wheelchair accessible beach) in the greater st. Johns area.
  • Our schedule of the day is as follows:
  • 1pm to 130 pm: opening remarks, speeches from Black, Indigenous and racialized people on the protection and appreciation of the Atlantic ocean.
  • 130pm to 230pm: Beach clean up and children’s scavenger hunt (saftey materials will be provided but feel free bring your own).
  • 2: 30pm – 3: 30 pm: picnic near the beach (vegan and gluten free options as well as locally made snacks) with a children’s story reading “we are water protectors” by local artist and two spirit environmentalist Jude Benoit accompanied by their mermaid friend  🧜‍♀️
  • 3:30pm-4:30pm: Community presentations of ocean protection, environmental education and BIPOC cultural and spiritual ties to the ocean.
  • 4:30pm-5:00pm: Mi’kmaq water ceremony and closing ceremonies.

Important note* Although children are encouraged and welcome they must be accompanied by a parent or adult.*

We encourage all participants to dress in layers to protect ourselves from the Newfoundland/ Ktaqmkuk weather. As well as bring sunscreen, hats and comfy shoes.

Transportation may be available through refunds on wheelchair accessible taxis, car pooling and a rented (not wheelchair accessible) bus that will be coming to the beach from center city st. Johns in the morning and returning in the evening after the festival.
