We are excited to announce the launch of the “Ocean, Freshwater & Us” digital map, a groundbreaking tool that vividly illustrates the intrinsic connections between Canadians, our freshwater systems, and the ocean. This interactive map is now available for exploration at www.canadaoceanmap.ca

About the Map
“Ocean, Freshwater & Us” offers a vivid representation of how the freshwater systems—lakes, rivers, and wetlands—are intrinsically linked to the ocean, influencing marine ecosystems thousands of kilometres away. Large arrows on the map show the flow of freshwater across the country, emphasizing that, while few Canadians live close to the ocean, all are connected to it. The map highlights the impact of human activity on these waters and showcases the efforts across Canada to protect the ocean through a diverse network of protected areas. Additionally, users can explore ocean connection in Canada through stories and videos from Indigenous peoples and coastal communities across the country.

“Hopefully, looking at Ocean, Freshwater, and Us through this rich and interconnected cartographic lens will meaningfully inform and inspire Indigenous and non-Indigenous people as we work together to better protect the water around us.” – Cartographer Chris Brackley

This map is the result of a national collaboration led by the Canadian Ocean Literacy Coalition, in partnership with the Royal Canadian Geographical Society and various other organizations. This initiative reflects a commitment to enhancing ocean literacy and fostering an understanding of the critical role we play in protecting marine and freshwater ecosystems.
