From the ocean floor to the pages of history—a conversation between two disciplines that explore the same waters. In this lecture, archaeology and oceanography come together to explore the challenges of navigation in days gone by: ice, fog, opposing currents… and the shipwrecks that still bear witness to these voyages through the environment and the history of navigation.
Moderated by Lyne Morissette (UQAR-ISMER & M – Expertise Marine), researchers Mathilde Jutras (oceanographer (UQAR)), and Marijo Gauthier-Bérubé (underwater archaeologist (UQAR-ISMER)), bring their perspectives to bear on the St. Lawrence River to explore its many facets, examining the relationships between natural phenomena such as ice, fog, and currents and the narratives of navigation and their shipwrecks, while addressing the consequences of climate change on the environment and archaeological sites.
