Citizen Science SCUBA & Snorkel Workshop!

Ocean Week Victoria

June 8th 2025 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Victoria, British Columbia
Help us celebrate World Ocean Day 2025!

Wilson Diving is hosting a Citizen Science Workshop on June 8 2025

What is that?- TDLR learn critter identification and help survey our underwater world!

Citizen science is important for long-term monitoring of the planet’s ecosystem because it enables widespread, continuous data collection across large geographic areas that would be difficult for scientists to cover alone. By involving the public, it also fosters environmental awareness and stewardship, encouraging communities to actively participate in conservation efforts.

We will be doing 1-2 citizen science dives with Wilson’s own Marine Biologist and PADI Staff Instructor, Mara (🥰). Learn how to identify local marine life, take effective identification pictures, different survey methods including using transects and easily upload them to a citizen science database! Bring a slate and a camera (gopro, iphone housing, small underwater camera, whatever you have!) – contact us if you need a camera rental as we will have a limited number available.

All are welcome – the event is free to join and open to divers AND snorkellers!! 10% off rentals, and 10% off the purchase of an Oceanic or Sealife phone housing. Donations are encouraged and all proceeds will go to a local marine charity. You must be a certified SCUBA Diver to participate in the SCUBA portion, no certification is necessary for snorkeling.

There is also the option to receive the PADI AWARE Fish ID Specialty certification, which counts towards the Master Scuba Diver Rating!! Part of the proceeds from AWARE certifications go towards the PADI AWARE foundation & ocean conservation. This specialty is $60 (this is a VERY discounted rate of 70% off!).
