Bottom Dwellers: A Deep Sea Musical (The Unnatural Disaster Theatre Co.)

Ocean Week Halifax

June 8th 2024 - June 9th 2024
Halifax and Dartmouth, NS, Nova Scotia

Bottom Dwellers: A Deep Sea Musical  is a one-act odyssey centred around the life of a weary and wise 400-year-old Greenland shark. As best friends Hagfish, Urchin, and Crab celebrate an incoming feast around a fresh whalefall, they face a dire warning from the shark about the ways in which the ocean has been changing. They are forced to reckon with their own understanding of the world around them, and ask the audience – how can we truly perceive change, let alone act on it?

Designed for all ages, this new educational musical experience is crafted to improve ocean literacy and address climate anxiety in Nova Scotia and beyond. We have assembled an all-star team including 2023 Creative Nova Scotia Established Artist Award recipient GaRRy Williams, Merritt-award-nominated projection designer MacKenzie Cornfield, Dalhousie Biology PhD candidate Ellie Weise, acclaimed Halifax actor and musician Katherine Norris, and Merritt-award-nominated director Logan Robins.

This workshop production is being presented with support from the Canadian Ocean Literacy Coalition, Eastern Front Theatre’s “Stages Festival”, and The Discovery Centre.
