Capturing the Coast : live Painting with Anne & Edward Wedler

About the Artists

These two “come alive” when they paint along Nova Scotia’s coastline — from its broad sandy beaches, rugged rocky headlands and resilient coastal communities. They love to capture its many moods.

Join them for a unique dual demonstration celebrating the spirit of the Atlantic.

While Anne uses the rich, luminous texture of oils to capture the enduring strength of the coast, Edward employs the fluid transparency of watercolor to mirror the ocean’s shifting light. Together, they will demonstrate how two different media can interpret the same maritime mood—from the rugged shoreline to the rhythmic movement of the tide.

Oil Demonstration by Anne Wedler

Anne is a plein air artist who specializes in oil and acrylic painting, known for her ability to capture the weight and atmosphere of the East Coast landscape. She travels extensively to paint on location, translating the natural world into vibrant, textured works. Her demos focus on building depth and light through deliberate, expressive brushwork. Anne will demonstrate creating a larger painting from a study of a shoreline with breaking waves, and a bank of clouds reflected in the water and wet sand on the beach.

“I grew up around water and I gravitate to water. My childhood was spent canoeing, sailing and boating on the Great Lakes and Muskoka Lakes. These were big bodies of water but they were NOT the ocean. I raced and taught sailing for years When I “ met”  the ocean I fell in love! It was like finding a part of me, that I didn’t know I was missing! I’m drawn to the Tall Ships events, Sail GP, we sailed bare-boat in the BVI, snorkelled in Hawaii, Great Barrier Reef and Caribbean. Love aquatic life of whales, fish, jellyfish, seaweed. I’ve explored coastlines, cliffs, headlands,  tidal pools, waves and beaches. I am curious about the ocean, it holds many mysteries. The sound of the endless waves – soothes and calms. As an artist, the ocean  provides endless inspiration. The ocean with its power, it’s beauty, it’s solitude, it’s moodiness, it’s endlessness, it’s connectiveness. The ocean is what I love best about Nova Scotia.”

Watercolour Demonstration by Edward Wedler

Once a research scientist with a background in geomatics and satellite oceanography, Edward brings a unique analytical eye to his fluid watercolor landscapes. As a juried plein air artist and instructor, he explores the intersection of structural patterns and the immediacy of nature. His work often reflects his lifelong fascination with how we observe the Earth and oceans from both a scientific and artistic perspective. During his lifetime he has witnessed the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, Arctic and Southern Oceans of the world — in ocean going vessels, from aircraft and via space imagery. He plans to demonstrate two watercolours — an approaching Halifax storm and a foggy morning on Brier Island. He offers to talk about his experiences in Newfoundland and over Canada’s western arctic ocean.
