Students from White Hills Academy (Grade 8) will learn about species at risk and the importance of the world’s oceans. There will be a additional learning emphasis on the uniqueness of Pistolet Bay and it’s Parker’s River Arctic Char population (the only anadromous population on the island of NL). Students will learn about the various restoration activities completed on the river over the past few years. Students will also be educated on sustainable commercial harvesting practices (gear, methods demonstration) in lobster/ or crab and lobster/ crab biology. As well, students, along with Fishery Officers and Fishery Guardians will complete a beach clean up near the mouth of the river and along the beach, followed up by a beachside BBQ.
