The Wild Bird Trust membership, local DNV residents and interested publics are invited to attend our second annual symposium (June 3rd, 2023, 10am-2pm, Maplewood Flats Nature House) to connect with leading edge scientists from UBC’s Living with Water Institute, and practitioners exploring sea-level rise issues in Burrard Inlet.

We will consider global and local impacts on climate change and sea-level rise, explore actions and innovations being taken, understand how Indigenous Knowledge is guiding solutions, and consider landscape architecture alternatives on the site. Speakers will be present in the nature house, as well as across the site through scheduled nature walks. By centering climate solutions with Indigenous Knowledge we can effectively apply both a justice lens and a science lens to this crisis. Hear from a wide range of professionals and academics who use tools to address the sea-level rise here in Coast Salish lands and waters. Public policy on climate change adaptation must include education and orientation to practical local solutions.

Through our 2nd annual symposium we bring hard science and technical solutions to the waterfront of the DNV. Climate action can not be led and solved by technicians and specialists, it has to be conducted and advanced by the public. The symposium and reading materials (distributed in advance) and resulting distributed speaker videos fosters a supportive community. Dialogue takes place between world-renowned scientists and the local public, with the 2022 special guest presenter Geert Ovink, UN Ambassador for Water. This program directly trains local residents and provides opportunities to apply knowledge systems in situ at Maplewood Flats. This makes one of the key sites in North Vancouver more adaptive and resilient to the impacts of climate change by centering solutions in the public domain.

HOW TO ATTEND: This event will be onsite at the Nature House and on the trails. After registering, you will receive an email confirmation from Eventbrite. We will also send you a Volunteer Intake Form that we invite you to complete in advance of the session.
