The Ocean Week events will take place as a part of Watersheds Canada’s “Nature in the Classroom” programming at W.E. Gowling P.S. and Carleton Heights P.S., both located in Ottawa, Ontario. Both of these schools are RAISE schools (Resource Allocation Index based on Socioeconomics) which means they have limited financial donations to provide enrichment and extracurriculars. These particular schools also have high populations of new Canadians and ELL (English language learners). We are delivering our curriculum-linked fish and native plants units in May and June and will be including some hands-on science activities for the grade 1-4 students. The workshops will focus on native plants and freshwater health, parts of a plant, and freshwater ecosystems. The workshops will increase student knowledge of local nature and species, and empower student-led action to protect Ottawa freshwater areas and Canada’s ocean at large. We want to enhance the freshwater action and community science component of the workshops with hands-on learning using one Water Rangers education testkit.
