Something exciting is launching in Yellowknife just in time for Ocean Week Canada, and the whole community is invited to be part of it!
In partnership with the Yellowknife Public Library, Wıı̀lıı̀deh Yati and Tłı̨chǫ Yatıì translators, and local artists, this wonderful event marks the launch of Watersheds Canada’s Nature Discovery Backpack lending library. These backpacks are packed with exploration tools, field guides, and Water Rangers testkits, giving local families everything they need to head outside and discover the natural world around them.
Thanks to funding from Water Rangers, the workshops will feature hands-on freshwater testing using a Water Rangers education testkit, bringing community science to life for families and young learners alike. Participants will get to explore local nature and species up close, and learn about actions they can take to help protect the incredible ecosystems in their own backyard.
With workshops offered in multiple Indigenous languages alongside English, this event is truly a celebration of community, culture, and connection to the land and water. Students will leave feeling empowered knowing that their curiosity and care can make a real difference for the freshwater and natural spaces they call home.
From the beautiful waterways of the Northwest Territories to the world’s oceans, every young explorer has a role to play!
