June 4th 2024 11:00 AM - June 8th 2024 10:00 PM
Trout River, Newfoundland and Labrador

Monday, June 3

Opening Ceremonies at Jakeman All Grade (JAG) OR Trout River beach (weather permitting) beginning at 11 am.  AHOI will be putting an ROV into the cove to allow us to see any garbage or debris in this lobster and capelin sanctuary.  DFO will be giving a presentation on Species at Risk prior to opening ceremonies and the Qalipu will be leading us in songs and drumming.  There will be a family BBQ from 12-1 pm.  All participants will be offered a FREE BBQ and cake.  We will be doing a beach clean-up from 1-3 pm.  During this time, students can participate in the World Oceans Day Scavenger Hunt.  We will also get a chance to see Jake the Jaguar and Parka (JAG’s and Parks Canada’s mascots). There is no formal registration for this event.

Tuesday, June 4

Students will be working with Creative Gros Morne to design the artwork for a concrete bench with an emphasis on our maritime culture.  This bench will be placed in the community for everyone’s enjoyment.

Wednesday, June 5

The community is invited to bring along their favourite dish for a Family Brunch at noon.  Throughout the day, students will join DFO for a virtual presentation on Invasive Species.  Students will also view a documentary titled, “The Call of the Wild.”  Join Fred Campbell on this unique adventure celebrating fly fishing, nature, and salmon conservation.

Thursday, June 6

We will also be hosting a ‘Planting Party.’  All volunteers will learn how to plant tree seedlings and we will begin planting tree seedlings along our river to provide shade to returning salmon.  Our salmon are genetically diverse and unique to this river which makes conservation efforts more challenging.  We are working with many partners to increase this salmon population.

Friday, June 7

JAG will host an Ocean Trivia Event beginning at 1 pm.  The public are invited to attend this event and admission will be by donation. Prizes will be given for all participants.  Students have been reading our new children’s literature books which have a focus on ocean conservation and sustainability in preparation for this event.  There is no formal registration for this event.

We will have LIVE music by local entertainers, Kendra Parsons and Paul Rumbolt (TUFF) from 8-10 pm followed by fireworks around 10 pm.  Our local fire department will be hosting a BBQ.  This event will be held at the lower viewpoint on the Boardwalk, near the Interpretation Building.

We are very proud to announce the following partners:

Jakeman All Grade, Canadian Ocean Literacy Coalition, Parks Canada, DFO, AHOI, Treehouse – BBS, SPARC, By ‘da Bay Trails, Town of Trout River, Qalipu, Atlantic Lottery Corporation, and Creative Gros Morne.
