Rob Knaggs

About The Artist

Brisbane avant-cellist Rob Knaggs is known for his immersive live performances and atmospheric soundscapes inspired by his years in sub-arctic Churchill, Manitoba. In the past five years, he’s performed for beluga whales and beneath the northern lights, collaborated with throat singers, supported Tim Hecker, represented Manitoba at travel conferences, and played festivals like Woodford Folk.

Blending the ethereality of Björk with the orchestral power of Arcade Fire, Knaggs loops and layers his cello into cinematic, post-rock compositions. His latest EP, Foreshore—recorded in Winnipeg and mastered at Sigur Rós’ Sundlaugin studio—features everything from the gentle Kallie to the haunting A Natural Response.

His live shows include stunning visuals of northern Canada, captured by Tomas Taylor and Elbert Bakker, offering audiences a glimpse into the remote ecology that shapes his sound.

Ocean Soundscapes

Winnipeg, Manitoba

June 5th 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM

Join CPAWS Manitoba for an evening of ocean-inspired art and music that explores the fragility of the Arctic ecosystem and the importance of protecting Hudson Bay. Featuring a live cello performance by Rob Knaggs alongside a video montage of Churchill’s marine environment, the event will blend storytelling, immersive soundscapes, and community participation. Attendees will have the opportunity to contribute to a collaborative video artwork by sharing their personal connections to the ocean. With northern artisans also joining to showcase their work, the evening aims to connect southern Manitobans to the North’s people, wildlife, and waters—fostering a deeper understanding of our shared responsibility to protect marine life for future generations.
