Although High River is located in the prairie region, the conservation of the Highwood River plays an important role in Canada’s hydrological system, as rivers eventually connect to the ocean. Join the IRERI-Mexican, Latino & Cross-Cultural Society, an Ocean Week Canada grant recipient, for a free family celebration exploring the connections between inland communities and the sea.
The event will cover water conservation, the importance of rivers, river wildlife, marine ecosystems, and the human impact on the oceans. Learn about migratory marine species that travel between Canada and Mexico, including whales, sea turtles, and certain bird species, as well as the efforts of scientists and naval forces dedicated to marine conservation. Members of the immigrant community will share their perspectives and cultural connections to the sea and how their countries are linked to the oceans. Attendees will also have the opportunity to support a Greenpeace Mexico petition aimed at protecting natural areas such as the Maya Jungle and the Mahahual region, home to mangroves, coral reefs, beaches, and marine species currently threatened by tourism development and plastic pollution.
The celebration includes children’s crafts and educational activities, storytelling, cultural displays, and a Mexican folkloric dance presentation by IRERI-Smiles Inclusive Mexican Folkloric Ballet.
