In celebration of Ocean Week, Surfrider South Vancouver Island is partnering with RAVEN Trust to fundraise and bring awareness to their Step Up for Coast Heroes campaign. In 2016, an uncertified tug ran aground and spilled over 110,000 litres of diesel oil in Heiltsuk waters on the central coast of British Columbia, contaminating key shellfish harvesting areas and critical habitat. Nearly ten years later, the Nation still cannot use the marine harvesting sites damaged by the spill. With a landmark legal challenge, Heiltsuk Nation aims to toughen oil spill regulations across Canada and set a precedent for Aboriginal title to the foreshore and seabed.
