For thousands of years, ocean-going canoes have been central to life, culture, and identity along the Pacific Northwest Coast of Canada. Sacred Journey shares the powerful story of these vessels and the people, knowledge, and relationships they carry. This immersive exhibition explores the cultural and spiritual significance of Indigenous canoe traditions, with a focus on the resurgence of canoe practices in recent decades. Through film, storytelling, and contemporary Indigenous art, visitors learn how canoes continue to connect communities, pass on knowledge and language, and support cultural revitalization today and into the next millennia. The canoe is a living expression of resilience, rights, and responsibility, affirming relationships to land and sea. Sacred Journey invites visitors to experience this living tradition through Indigenous voices and perspectives, both on the water and across generations.
Developed in partnership with the Heiltsuk Nation. Included with museum admission.
