From coastal shores to freshwater streams, secondary students on southern Vancouver Island are taking their science education outside and into the incredible ecosystems right on their doorstep!
This Ocean Week Victoria, a wonderful cross-curricular collaboration brings together grade 11 students in Marine Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Science for a series of hands-on field excursions across some of the most beautiful and diverse habitats the region has to offer. Coastal sites, estuaries, wetlands, and freshwater locations will all be on the itinerary, giving students a full picture of how these environments connect to one another and to the ocean beyond.
Thanks to equipment funding from Water Rangers, students will collect and analyze real water quality data using Water Rangers tools in the field, turning every excursion into a genuine scientific adventure. These are the kinds of experiences that make classroom concepts click in a whole new way!
For a school community that includes many newcomers to Canada, these outings offer something especially meaningful: a chance to connect with the stunning natural environment of their new home, build lasting environmental awareness, and discover that science is something you live, not just something you study.
From watersheds to the wide open ocean, these young scientists are building skills and a love for their local waters that will last a lifetime.
