An Ocean of Plastic

Ocean Week Vancouver

July 5th 10:00 AM - 8:00 PM
Vancouver, British Columbia

Installation by Monique Martin

Shocked by the scale of the Pacific Garbage Patch and the devastating toll of plastic pollution on marine life, artist Monique Martin felt a deep urgency to respond. An Ocean of Plastic is a powerful, multi-sensory installation that plunges viewers into the heart of a growing crisis—where ocean debris, much of it international in origin, washes up on our own local shores.

Using hand-drawn transparencies, Monique created 100 unique silkscreen monoprints on sheer fabric panels, suspended closely together to evoke the suffocating density of floating plastic. As visitors move through the installation, they are engulfed—surrounded and confined by layers of ghostly debris. Lit from above to mimic sunlight on the ocean’s surface, the effect is both beautiful and haunting, forcing a confrontation with the weight of our waste.

This exhibition invites reflection, discomfort, and ultimately, a call to action.
