Richmond, British Columbia

The Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site is excited to present a variety of events, workshops, and pop-up exhibits celebrating Ocean Week Canada! Free activities will be available outside the site, with additional activities inside the Cannery available with the cost of admission. The Cannery is free to enter for children under 18, and is $13.25 for adults.

  • June 1st-9th, discover a pop-up exhibit from featuring Susan Taylor, whose work emphasizes the beauty and importance of plankton. The artist will be on site on Saturday, June 1st from 12pm-1:30pm and Saturday, June 8th, from 11am-1pm and 2pm-3pm with a microscope for visitors to take a look at plankton samples!
  • June 1st, we will be visited by Parks Canada’s Southern Resident Killer Whale Outreach Team, who will be educating the public on the importance of species conservation. Learn about endangered killer whales, ask questions about their research, and get some ideas on how to help our ocean friends!
  • June 8th, Alongside World Ocean Day 2024, Spot Prawn Day is on in Steveston– a grand festival of seafood! The Gulf of Georgia Cannery will be offering a FREE gyotaku workshop in partnership with Tourism Richmond. Gyotaku (魚拓) is a Japanese style of printing fish. It was originally used by fishermen to record their catches but grew into the art form we see today. Presenting will be internationally acclaimed artist, Paula Nishikawara. She will be leading two sessions where people are welcome to try fish printing for themselves, on Saturday, June 8th, from 11:30am – 1:30am, and 2:30pm – 4:30pm. Entrance is first come first serve, so don’t be late!
  • June 8th-9th and June 16th, our collaboration with UBC hits the streets, talking about our feature exhibit, Fish Tales! Sharing how food connects us to the community and the land, our outreach students will be inspiring the public to share their fish and seafood recipes! Receive a FREE can of Pacific salmon to inspire your creativity, and submit a recipe to be entered to win one of three fabulous prize packages.
