Cigarette butts are the most common litter found on our streets, beaches, and parks. Approximately 450,000 cigarette butts are littered in Vancouver every day.
During rain events, cigarette butts get washed into storm drains and make their way to the ocean, negatively impacting the environment and marine life.
Join us forĀ Ocean Week Canada from June 1 to 8, 2024, and take part in the Cigarette Litter Challenge. By collecting as many cigarette butts as possible, we help raise awareness of litter and microplastics in our ocean.
There are four ways to participate in the challenge:
- Mini cleanup – borrow equipment from one of our policing centre partners for an hour or two
- Join an organized cleanup – register for a cleanup organized by the City or one of our partners
- Host your own litter cleanup – request equipment from our Neighbourhood Cleanup Program
- Spread the word – download our poster and post or share it
