The Town of Burgeo on the south coast of Newfoundland is part of a feasibility assessment for the establishment of the South Coast Fjords National Marine Conservation Area and the re-designation of Sandbanks Provincial Park as a National Park. Ocean Week events are being planned for community engagement from May through to the end of June. This event will be planned to engage community members (older children and adults) on microplastics in Newfoundland, a region that has been understudied. We aim to educate community members on why microplastics are harmful, their effect to the environment, and their prevalence on the beaches within Sandbanks Provincial Park. Sessions will include story time for young children about the dangers of marine plastics, educational sessions for older students and adults, and hands on testing.
