This interdisciplinary learning experience supports climate, sustainability, and global citizenship education through hand-on activities by some of Canada’s leading ocean educators.

We invite interested teachers and students (Grades 4 to 10) in St John’s and nearby communities to join us Thursday June 1 for the Ocean Week Canada 2023 Schools Festival at the Johnson Geo Centre from 12pm-2:30pm. We then invite the public to join us from 2:30pm-5:00pm!

Participants will experience:

  1. Ocean, Freshwater & Us giant floor map
    • Explore the 8m x 6m giant floor map with augmented reality that highlights watersheds, water flow, and Marine Protected Areas across Canada.
  2. Petty Harbour Mini Aquarium

    • Dive into interactive activities focused on marine life such as a model robotic arm for coral retrieval, a virtual reality diving program, as well as plenty of additional ocean themed games and activities.
  3. Opulent Oceans Exhibit

    • Be the first to experience the newly launched Opulent Oceans Exhibit at the Johnson Geo Centre, a 2D exhibition that highlights the integral role scientific illustration has played in undersea exploration and discovery.
  4. Climate Science
    • Educators from the Conservation Corps of NL will introduce the science behind the rise in global temperature and the subsequent physical, social, economical, and emotional impacts of this dramatic shift on the earth and its inhabitants.
  5. Fishing For Success
    • Springtime means that its Macroinvertebrate Mayhem in your favourite trouting pond or stream! We’ll learn about the connection between aquatic insects, healthy ecosystems, and sustainable hook & line fishing with a hands-on exhibit. Create your own Project WET Canada field guide card set of pond critters.
  6. Indigenous Water Guardians Video Collection
    • Indigenous Peoples have been taking care of water for thousands of years. Today, Indigenous Guardians continue to honour this responsibility on behalf of Indigenous Nations. This work is rooted in Indigenous laws, knowledge, science, and culture, and it helps conserve vibrant freshwaters and oceans for all people. View a selection of Guardians’ stories.
