The health of the global ocean and freshwater ecosystems, as well as the biodiversity they each sustain, are critical for our community, cultural, and economic well-being. Pollution, climate change, habitat loss, and many other factors related to human activity pose a risk to our water systems and the species that live there. This hands-on toolkit, developed by the Canadian Museum of Nature and Ingenium, promotes the importance of aquatic health throughout Canada. The activities showcased below were created for interpreters in museums, science centres, and aquariums to be used during Ocean Week Canada and beyond. However, all the information and materials required to engage in these activities are detailed in this digital toolkit. You can do it yourself!
Read and use the Ocean Week Canada key messages to help guide your learning journey.
The RiverBot Garbage Gulper activity is ideal for introducing coding and digital skills programming. This is a fun way to include ocean topics in programming offerings during Ocean Week (June 3 – 12) and throughout the UN Ocean Decade (2021-2030).
The Focus on Microplastics portion of this activity will interest any budding scientists eager to take a closer look at marine plastics and their impacts on living organisms.
Test your ocean smarts! Beyond the Sea – Water Trivia Game is well suited to anyone who likes to play and learn with friends, family, or colleagues. Try it out during Ocean Week Canada (June 3-12) or anytime throughout the United Nations Ocean Decade (2021-2030)!
